The Importance of Fiber
Improve Your Digestion with Fiber
Many of us are familiar with the role that fruits and vegetables play in promoting a healthy lifestyle, but did you know that every time you eat them, they also contribute to your daily fiber intake which is an integral part of a healthy diet; it helps to keep us feeling fuller longer, aids in digestion, helps to heal the intestines and can lower cholesterol levels.
Some people may feel some discomfort if they eat a lot of fiber. The reason for this is because as fiber travels through your intestines, it fills the entire canal (tube) of the intestine, and this can cause the nerves that line the intestine to become sensitive. Alternatively, if you eat something without fiber such as a hard boiled egg, you may feel like it gets digested well but this is because it does not touch the intestinal wall, therefore, not activating any nerves. When you eat something with fiber such as lettuce, celery, berries or broccoli, some people may just feel a little uncomfortable if your nerves are very sensitive. If it is too painful, try instead other fibrous foods such as bananas, avocado, steamed potatoes, squash, and other cooked vegetables.
Fiber is also found in other foods, such as beans, nuts and whole grains. When you eat a diet rich in fiber, it can help to reduce the risk of certain diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and strokes. Further, fiber helps to regulate blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, and promote healthy bowel movements. Incorporating it into your diet is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and is an essential part of a balanced diet, and yet many of us don’t get enough of it in our daily lives.
So, in order to make sure you are getting enough fiber in your diet, try to include at least five (or more) servings of fruits and vegetables in your meals each day. Not only will you be getting the essential nutrients you need, but you’ll also be helping to get your daily fiber intake up to recommended levels.
Finally, remember that fiber is important for everyone, so don’t forget to encourage your family and friends to get their five servings each day too.
